Bush appointee intones: Soon America will recognize our "true parent role models"

Ominously, David Caprara -- head of the War on Poverty program VISTA -- has this to say:
Many Americans are gradually becoming aware that our nation has a new day of commemoration called Parents' Day. [...] inspired by your commitment, Reverend Moon, to the ideal of establishing true parent role models.
I found this statement in a 2002 "tribute book" of people paying tribute to the Washington Times owner and political extremist. On page 17 of this PDF [here's a JPG link], two followers of Sun Myung Moon in the U.S. government fess up to what's long been a suspicion...

...that a "Parent's Day" signed into law by Bill Clinton in 1994 (having been introduced by Trent Lott) was a sneaky way of paying tribue to Moon, the self-described "true parent" of humanity. The co-author of this piece, David Caprara -- the head of Moon's American Family Coalition -- was named by Bush to direct AmeriCorps's VISTA program. I don't believe he's cut ties with the AFC while in this capacity. (The other author is a Moon-following state representative in Arizona.)

Here's a 1995 Washington City Paper article laying out the goods on "Parents' Day" as a holiday for this cheerfully Taliban-ish mogul.

Oh, and Dan Quayle sends Moon birthday greetings on another page in the PDF (page numbered 120 in the book), but that's par for the course.

Thought: Can we do better for parental role models than a convicted felon who rips off old ladies in Japan?

UPDATE: MW provides a quote from the Moonster that says it all:

Through True Mother we reached the American Congress and the United Nations through True Mother's speaking tour. We also declared True Parents Day to the world. Men and women in the American Congress didn't know what they were doing, but as you know Congress passed the resolution of Parents Day. -- 1997

"John Gorenfeld: The first man on the Moon"
-- Ana Marie Cox ("Wonkette," Time.com Washington editor)

"Thanks to the superb reporting of John Gorenfeld on Salon.com and his indispensable Web page, Moon's shenanigans are routinely scrutinized. Maybe some of Gorenfeld's discernment will rub off on preachers and politicians."
-- Tony Norman, Pittsburgh Post-Gazette columnist

"The scene summoned the moment in Robert Graves's "I, Claudius" when Emperor Caligula declares himself a god in the Roman Senate; a fawning solon instantly offers a prayer."
-- New York Times editorial on the Crown of Peace scandal

"I am happy that our work is being challenged and improved in consistency, openness and coordination, by the accountability your spotlight demands. I am not talking about simply removing stuff from websites..."
-- Moon spokesman the Rev. Phil Schanker

"Instead of welcoming Reverend Moon, this government put me into prison. History will reveal the truth in the future and the American government and people will realize what an evil thing they did. What will they do then? They will bow down. Again, that is the way of natural subjugation." -- Moon in 1987

"A political movement basing its appeal on old fashioned patriotism and family values simply cannot justify an alliance with a cult that preys on the disintegration of the American family and advocates allegiance to an international social order operating with cell-like secrecy."
-- Rep. Jim Leach (R-IA)
